Northcentral University is headquartered in Prescott Valley, Arizona, the university was founded in 1996 although its roots can be traced back to 1978 when its founder, Dr. Donald Hecht, established the Southern California University for Professional Studies (SCUPS) which provided correspondence courses and degree programs for busy adult students. With the advent of the Internet and the wide use of personal computers in 1996, Dr. Hecht decided to set up a separate institution that would offer degree programs online. Thus, Northcentral University was born.

Northcentral University is divided into three academic schools through which the online degrees are offered. These schools include the School of Business and Technology which offers Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration. The second academic school is the School of Education where students can pursue Bachelor of Education (BEd), Master of Education (MEd), Doctor of Education (EdD), and Doctor of Philosophy in Education. And finally, the third school is the School of Behavioral and Health Sciences which offers a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology.
