Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a comprehensive teaching and research institution which was chartered in 1895. Its main campus at 1425 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, Illinois spans 756 acres. It also operates several outreach centers located in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Oregon and Rockford, Illinois.
The university’s seven degree granting colleges offer a total of 63 undergraduate majors and 79 graduate programs including 11 Ph.D. programs as well as doctoral degrees in Education and the Juris Doctorate. The Northern Illinois University colleges are comprised of the College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Law, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. NIU’s 40 academic departments facilitate the delivery of specific programs per college.
Total enrollment is comprised of more than 25,000 students including almost 1,000 international students from at least 100 foreign countries. The faculty has 11,200 members. Average class size is 28 while student/faculty ratio is 17:1.
Northern Illinois University was founded in 1885 as the Northern Illinois State Normal School. It has travelled a long way since and now functions as a multipurpose educational institution.
