Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is a small, private, non-sectarian, four-year college of engineering, science and mathematics located in Terre Haute, Indiana. Founded in 1874 as Rose Polytechnic Institute, it was renamed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1971.
Today, there are approximately 1,964 students enrolled at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology taking up degree programs in such fields as Applied Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, and Software Engineering. With a student to faculty ratio of 12 to 1 and the average class size no more than 20, students enjoy a focused, one-on-one interaction with their teachers. There are currently 160 fulltime faculty members in the institute, 99% of them holding the highest degree possible in their respective fields.
Cost of attendance for academic year 2010-2011 for fulltime students living on or off campus is US$51,427 broken down into full-year tuition of US$35,595; fees of US$675; room rental at US$6,084; board/meal plan cost of US$3,873; miscellaneous and personal expenses at US$1,500; and laptop cost of US$2,200. Students living at home with their parents as well as those living independently off campus pay for the same items but their total costs differ because of some changes in the earmarked funds. For those living at home, for instance, cost of attendance is only US$43,225 because their cost for room and board is minimal, while for those living independently, their cost is US$54,314 because their miscellaneous and personal expenses can go as high as US$4,432, so much higher than those living on campus or at home with their families. Financial aid is extended to students in the form of loans, grants and scholarships.
