Northeastern University is a private research university founded in 1898 as a parochial university. It traces its roots to the Boston YMCA, a very well-known institution which provided lectures for young men seeking self-improvement. The huge success of the lectures in terms of its drawing power to students led to the establishment of the Evening Institute for Young Men which offered a variety of programs. Northeastern College was incorporated in 1916 to recognize the phenomenal growth of the academic programs. It eventually adapted the name Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association. It adapted its present name in 1935 as it started seeking its own identity distinct from that of YMCA. The complete separation finally happened in 1948 with the revision of the university charter and by-laws.
