Considered the oldest accredited naturopathic medical college in North America, the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) occupies a haven of natural beauty with its campus located at 049 SW Porter Street, Portland, Oregon. It was established in 1956 primarily to fill the void left by Western States Chiropractic College’s termination of its naturopathic program. It originally used the name National College of Naturopathic Medicine and only adapted its present name in 2006 to reflect its two core programs as well as its expected future offerings.
Naturopathic care is guided by the principles of the healing power of nature , treating the whole person, identifying and treating the cause, prevention as the best cure, “first do no harm”, and utilizing the doctor as teacher. At present, NCNM offers three graduate professional degrees consisting of the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM), and the Master of Acupuncture (MAc). Students will find themselves in the forefront of natural medicine, integrated medical education, patient care and research.
Aside from the school’s teaching clinic located at 3025 SW Corbett Avenue, Portland, Oregon, NCNM works with various community clinics in the Greater Portland Area to provide relevant clinical experience to its students. NCNM’s Natural Medicine Program is comprised of Botanical Medicine, Clinical Nutrition, Homeopathic Medicine, Mind/Body Medicine, Minor Surgery, Naturopathic Obstetrics/Midwifery, Classical Chinese Medicine and Physical Medicine. At least 1,800 alumni are practicing naturopathic physicians in various states and provinces as well as several foreign countries.
