Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) was founded in 1911 as one of three state normal schools established for teacher training. It is considered the oldest and largest public university in Middle Tennessee. It is located at 1301 East Main Street, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
MTSU has the largest undergraduate population in the State of Tennessee, having more than 25,000 students. It occupies a 515-acre campus housing 137 permanent building and occupying approximately 4.2 million square feet of space. Full-time faculty members number at 930.
The eight colleges of the university comprised of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Jennings A. Jones College of Business, Continuing Studies and Distance Learning, College of Education, Honors College, College of Liberal Arts, College of Mass Communication and College of Graduate Studies offer the various programs of MTSU. A total of eight bachelor’s degrees, ten master’s degrees plus the Specialist in Education Degree and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree comprise the educational options available to students. Eighty percent of certified teachers in the Tennessee Board of Regents System were produced by MTSU. The latest additions to the list of programs include Ph.D. Computational Science, Ph.D. Molecular Biosciences, Ph.D. Mathematics and Science Education, Ph.D. Literacy Studies and Master’s in Social Work.
Over 3,500 students and families have chosen the campus residence halls and apartments as their homes while attending classes at MTSU. Shared housing ranges from $ 1,613.00 to $ 2,741.00 while private housing ranges from $ 2,205.00 to $ 3,544.00. Unlimited meal plan costs $ 1,352.12. In-state students pay approximately $ 17,615.00 for undergraduate studies and $ 20,896.00 for graduate studies. These rates include tuition, room and board, books, travel and miscellaneous expenses. Inclusive of the same items, out-of-state students pay $ 29,543.00 for undergraduate studies and $ 27,448.00 for graduate studies. Middle Tennessee State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees.
