Norfolk State University is a learning institution that adheres to the educational purpose that traditionally guides Historically Black Universities. This public, urban, comprehensive university was founded in 1935. It is located at 700 Park Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia and also maintains the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center.
Norfolk is a city of more than 100 diverse neighborhoods and is considered a cultural, educational and business hub. It has over 300 years of maritime and naval heritage and it also hosts the world’s largest naval base. As a whole, the city is undergoing renewal and revitalization works.
There are nearly 6,000 students enrolled with the university. Student/ teacher ratio is an ideal 17:1. More than 80 student organizations are active in the campus comprised of special interest clubs, honor societies, professional societies, fraternities and sororities, religious organizations, drama groups, political clubs, an orchestra, marching band, choir, a jazz band and many others.
Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Norfolk State University awards associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate degrees. The programs are provided through the School of Education, College of Liberal Arts, College of Science/Engineering and Technology, the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work, and School of Business. The academic offerings of the university consist of 30 bachelor’s degree programs, 2 associate degree programs, 16 master’s degree programs and 3 doctoral degree programs.
The estimated per semester cost of attending Norfolk State University is $ 6,650.54 for in-state students and $ 12,680.09 for out-of-state students. These amounts include payment of tuition and fees for 15 undergraduate credit hours, room rate for double occupancy, and a 14-meal plan. Financial aid is provided through non-need scholarships, need-based scholarships, work-study awards, part-time jobs and low interest/long term loans.
