The New School was founded in 1919 as an educational venue for free discussion of ideas, devoid of any censorship. Established by a group of unconventional thinkers as The New School for Social Research, invitation to enroll were directed at the so-called “intelligent men and women”. At the time of its legal incorporation in 1922, the school offered a curriculum for educated adults that put emphasis on the various issues of the time including the social, political, economic and educational aspects. It is located at 66 West 12th Street, New York, New York. It has adapted the official name The New School with its previous name assigned for use by one of its eight schools.
There are more than 10,200 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the various programs of the university’s eight schools. These schools are comprised of The New School for General Studies, The New School for Social Research, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy, Parsons The New School for Design, Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, Mannes College The New School for Music, The New School for Drama and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. There are at least 81 degree/diploma programs and majors offered by the university.
The faculty is composed of 372 full-time members and 1,713 part-time members. Student/faculty ratio is 9:1. There are over 60,000 living alumnae of The New School making their name in their respective fields in various parts of the world.
The New School has made available all kinds of intellectually challenging programs on the online format. Qualified adult learners are offered degree and certificate programs either to earn a bachelor’s degree, an MA in Media Studies, a graduate certificate in Media Management, an AAS in Fashion Marketing, an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or an undergraduate certificate in Screenwriting. Study Abroad Programs are offered by The New School in the cities of Bangalore, Cape Town, Florence, London, Paris, Verona, Berlin, Edinburgh, Krakow and many others.
